Icelandic composer Þorður Magnússon (b. 1973) belongs to a generation of composers who have helped establish Icelandic contemporary music on the international stage. Born in Reykjavik, he studied composition and theory at the Reykjavik College of Music before continuing his studies at the Conservatoire de Paris, primarily with Emmanuel Nunes. Alongside his work as a composer, Magnússon has built a successful career as an arranger and orchestrator, working across classical, jazz, popular and film music. His own compositions reveal a distinctive musical voice, characterized by colourful sonorities, rhythmic vitality and an imaginative interplay between traditional and contemporary musical languages. The piano occupies an important place in Magnússon's output. Scenes of Iceland (islenskt landslag) evokes the landscapes and atmosphere of his native country. Movements such as 'Highlands Seen from a Bird's Eye' and 'Dance of the Northern Lights' suggest a musical world in which Iceland's natural environment inspires vivid contrasts of colour, rhythm and movement.Namur is inspired by a poem of the same name by Icelandic author Guðbergur Bergsson. The poem explores the extraction of geothermal energy for electricity generation, reflecting on the tension between nature and human intervention. It draws a connection with the Svartsengi geothermal power plant on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula, where the mineral-rich water left over from energy production helped give rise to the Blue Lagoon. Through this imagery, the poem considers humanity's enduring desire to harness the Earth's resources, often at the expense of the natural environment, in pursuit of power, convenience and wealth.Magnússon's piano music reflects a broader artistic philosophy in which tradition serves as a foundation for exploration rather than a limitation. Elements of traditional harmony, jazz and modernist writing come together with references to Icelandic culture and landscape, resulting in music that is contemporary yet accessible, combining technical demands with vivid colours and expressive depth.Italian pianist Domenico Codispoti brings these works to life with sensitivity, commitment and a keen ear for their rich tonal colours.
