P.E. Lange-Müller (1850-1926) thought little of what he had made. He shrank from the honours his country pressed upon him - but Denmark heard it otherwise. Largely self-taught, a melodist by instinct, he set his tunes to a harmony no one had taught him, and across half a century he wrote more than two hundred songs that were sung and played in Danish homes as no others were.
